10 simple steps to protect your computer from threats

Computer and Internet has become an integral part of everyone’s life, we now do things from booking a movie ticket to managing complex businesses all with the help of computer and internet, directly or indirectly. Even though there is lot of merits involved in using a computer, one serious issue that computer and internet has is chance of your personal data being exposed to cyber criminals? Hacking and hackers are reality with 57% of Americans and people throughout the world are prone to attacks by hackers.

Even though there are advanced Anti-virus and firewall’s being developed to safeguard our computers, there is always a loop hole that hackers are ready to exploit.

Below given are ten simple steps when followed will make your computer and internet safer or at least will make life very hard for any hacker to hack in.

  • Strong password: Have different unique passwords that you can easily remember and randomly have it assigned to software, websites and networking programs where you use it. Make sure that the password has a special character (!@#$%^&) or a combination of numbers and alphabets.
  • Common user names: Avoid using common user names for the web services or software that you sign up. Search engines like Google can easily pinpoint the history of any particular user name and the culprits can guess your password or activity by it.
  • Basic firewall protection: Always have your computers default firewall turned on. Even though there is only limited protection provided by these firewalls, it can still protect you from common and major threats.
  • All- in-one computer protection software: Don’t have computer and internet protection software of different providers installed in the same computer, conflicts may happen between them and almost all of them will be deactivated because of it. Have an All-in-one computer protection software like AVG or Avira installed, it will prevent you from almost all the threats.
  • Scan external storage devices: Always have the habit of scanning your external storage devices (CD’s, DVD’s, Blue ray discs, memory stick etc) with Anti-virus software before transferring the data from them to your computer.
  • Instant messenger protection : Double check the files that you receive through instant messenger’s and make sure that it doesn’t have an .exe at the end of it, or consult with someone if you are not aware of the file type before accepting it.
  • Virtual keyboard: Use the virtual keyboard provided at the bank websites, especially when you are accessing them from a public computer. Different hacking software’s are used to record the key strokes and virtual keyboard eliminates this threat 100%.
  • Safe search options: Take advantage of the free safe search add-ons and plug-in provided by your Anti-virus software. The safe search will help you to browse through sites safely and will pinpoint harmful sites in the web.
  • Torrent and crack software: Avoid installing crack software otherwise called pirated software in your computer. Most of these software’s have a back door Trojan (a high risk computer virus) attached to them.
  • Wireless protection: Have unique user name and password set for the firmware page of your wireless router and always has a password to connect to your wireless network. If you don’t know how to set password in the router’s firmware, call your internet service provider or the router manufacturer and they can do it in minutes.
